While there was considerable controversy surrounding the
awards choices this year, the press corps was up in arms at several of the
selections, specifically Xavier Dolan, whose film they near universally panned,
showing little sympathy when his name was called. In fact, there were
snickers in the hall ahead of time reported by the British Guardian live blog wondering why he was there. While the highest
rated film in the history of the Screendaily Jury Grid, Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann, left the festival
empty-handed, people will be scratching their heads for months to come wondering what to think until
they have a chance to view these films themselves.
